B&M- Abreviated from 'Brick and mortar'. A cardroom having a real physical location, with live players, as opposed to an online game.
Back Into a Hand- To draw cards that make a hand that is different from the hand you were originally trying to make.
Backdoor ... Draw- Having three cards towards a straight or flush. For example, having three hearts with two more cards to be dealt would be a 'back door flush draw'.
Backer- Someone who finances a player.
Bad Beat- When a strong hand loses to a hand that catches a long shot card to win.
Bankroll- The amount of money you have set aside to gamble.
Behind- You don't have the best hand during play. For example, a pair of kings before the flop is behind if someone else has a pair of aces.
Bet- To voluntarily place chips/money into the pot.
Bet for Value- To make a bet to increase the money in the pot, but not to make players fold.
Bet Into- To bet before someone who showed strength in the previous betting round.
Bet the Pot- To bet the value of the pot, doubling it. For example, if the pot is $20, betting the pot would add another $20 to it.
Bicycle- A-2-3-4-5. The best possible low hand. Also called a "Wheel".
Big Blind- Typically the second player to the left of the dealer. This player is required to put in a full bet before the cards are dealt. This player usually is last to act in the first round, and can raise their initial bet if desired.
Blank- A card that fails to improve a player's hand.
Blind- A forced bet that one or more players to the dealer's left must make before any cards are dealt to start the action on the first round of betting.
Blind Bet or Raise- When a player raises without first looking at his or her cards.
Blind Steal- To win a small pot consisiting of only blinds by betting a weak hand and having other players fold.
Bluff- To bet or raise with a hand that is unlikely to be the best hand.
Board- Cards that are turned face up, either in the center of the table or to each player.
Bottom Pair- When you use the lowest card on the flop to make a pair.
Bounty- A small amount of cash awarded to a player when he knocks out another player in some tournaments.
Brick- A card that fails to improve a player's hand. More commonly known as a blank.
Brick and Mortar- A cardroom having a real physical location, with live players, as opposed to an online game. Abreviated as 'B&M'.
Bring It In- To start the betting on the first round.
Bring-In- The forced bet made on the first betting round by the player dealt the lowest card showing in seven card stud and the highest card showing in razz.
Broadway- An ace high straight.
Buck- The button. In older days, a buck knife was sometimes used to represent the dealer button. This is where the phrase 'Pass the buck' originated. In poker, it meant to pass the deal to the next player. Nowadays, it means to place the responsibility of an action on someone else.
Bug- A Joker that can be used to make straights and flushes and can be paired with Aces, but not with any other cards.
Bullet- An ace. A pair of aces is called Bullets.
Bump- To raise. Bump it up.
Buried Pair- In stud games, a pair dealt face down.
Burn- To put aside the top card, face down, before dealing out the cards. This is done to prevent cheating. It also applies to cards set aside that have been inadvertently revealed.
Bust Out- To lose all your chips.
Busted Hand- A worthless hand that has failed to improve.
Button- In all flop games, a small disk used to signify the player in the last position if a house dealer is used; a buck.
Buy-In- The minimum amount of money required to sit down in a particular game.
Buying the Button- When in late position in a game with a button, raising with the intention of making all players behind you. If successful, you become the last to act in each round, effectively "buying the button" for that hand.
